We have begun working on our Atlas of New England. Our audience is that 6-10 grade level. As a group, this age range can be a difficult one to taylor designs appropiately meaningful. For example, highly saturated colors are appropriate (in terms of design) but so are the more muted earth tones and pastels. At the same time, graphicly rich content (photos and etc) are as important as statistical content and meaning (ie, graphs, historgrams, and charts). These types of map elements allow the users to engage that map .... to use it for a device for knowledge construction.
We have also taken a look at the National Geography Standards for this age range ... to betteer understand how to design and construct our maps, for our audience.
We discussed how maps are used in this way and how some educators are using maps, and maps as games, for educational purposes.
